Enables Whole-Home DVR

Whole Home DVR (WHDVR) - also called multi-room DVR or total home DVR - is an exciting new Home Entertainment Networks application. The purpose of Whole Home DVR is to have one digital video recorder (DVR) that acts as the hub and allows TVs in every room of the house to have access to DVR functionality. This functionality includes recording, pausing and playing back from any enabled TV - all from one DVR.

Today with Whole Home DVR, one service provider that uses CopperGate chipsets already offers the ability to record up to 4 shows simultaneously. You can pause in one room and play back in another (also called follow-me TV), and record and play back concurrently.

The challenge of deploying Whole Home DVR is multifold: The technology must support multiple network nodes and data streams in multiple directions to multiple endpoint devices. It must also support different kinds of data streams, packet sizes and line rates. Fast forwarding and rewinding - common usage scenarios with DVRs - create a tremendous amount of data flowing over the network.
